The FAA has become aware of in-service corrosion in the PA-28 main spar lower cap aft flange upper surface at the WS 36 rib. If left untreated, failure of the lower spar could result in loss of control of the airplane.
Attached is an Airworthiness Concern Sheet (ACS) with more details on the subject. The ACS is intended for the FAA certification engineers to convey known airworthiness concerns to aircraft owner/operators through associations and type clubs. The FAA endorses the dissemination of this information.
As described in the ACS, we consider the airworthiness concern as Alert. Please provide input on this issue as requested in the ACS to this office within approximately 30 days (no later than January 15, 2017).
