Superior Air Parts is totally committed to the safety of its customers and is working closely with the FAA to determine the root cause and best course of action.

Coppell, TX (February 25, 2020)  — Representatives of Superior Air Parts, Inc., announced today that the company is aware of the FAA’s recent notice of proposed rulemaking (NRPM) concerning a proposed airworthiness directive (AD) for Superior Air Parts (SAP) model O-360, IO-360 reciprocating engines, and certain Lycoming Engines model AEIO-360, IO-360, and O-360-series reciprocating engines.

“Unfortunately, we were only informed of the proposed rule two-weeks ago. Since then, we have been in contact with the FAA regarding their findings to fully understand the issue and identify the most likely cause of the failures,” stated Scott Hayes, VP of sales and marketing Superior Air Parts, Inc. “Our engineering team is currently reviewing all of the available information, and once we have determined the actual cause, we can work with the FAA to determine the most logical course of action.”

Hayes said that the FAA estimates the AD would affect 115 crankshaft assemblies installed in U.S. registered certified aircraft. 

“All I can say for certain is that it is still just too early to form any type of conclusion about what caused these three crankshafts to fail the way they did,” stated Bill Ross, VP of product support, Superior Air Parts, Inc. “We want every one of our customers to know that we put safety ahead of everything and will do everything in our power to find the root cause as soon as possible.”

Hayes said that the affected crankshafts were all produced by a specific Superior Air Parts vendor between 2012 and 2014, with the following parts numbers: (P/N) SL36500-A20 or P/N SL36500-A31, with serial numbers 82976-01; 82976-02; SP12-0003 through AP12-0089, inclusive; SP13-0034 through SP13-0150, inclusive; or SP14-0151 through SP14-0202, inclusive.

The crankshaft assemblies were installed as original equipment on new Superior Air Parts Model O-360 and IO-360 engines, and as replacement parts under Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA) on certain Lycoming Model AEIO-360, IO-360, and O-360 engines.

 The popular Door StewardTM gas spring modification by Mtn View Aviation was recently granted FAA STC approval for the Piper PA32 and PA34 Rear Passenger doors. This added installation joins existing installations applicable to the Piper and Beech main cabin entry door.  Piper PA32 models known as Cherokee Six, Saratoga, Lance and 6X and the Piper PA34 Seneca.  These aircraft owners had been requesting a version for their aircraft rear door for some time.  The original version for Cessna aircraft was developed in 2002 by David Paradis because of the frustration and observation of pilots and passengers who were repeatedly nagged by unexpected door whips in even the slightest wind gusts.  Since introduction, over 16,000 of the Door StewardTM kits have been sold all over the US and internationally.  The modification utilizes a modern inert gas spring attached to the door frame and the door with stainless steel brackets.  When the door is unlatched the door gently but firmly, opens and holds the door in the full open position.  Closing the door compresses the gas spring again.  The force is not such that it is hard or uncomfortable to latch the door; in fact it closes and latches quite naturally.  The location of the gas spring is orientated to keep it out of the way while entering or exiting the aircraft.  On the Piper PA 32 and PA34 rear door version, the gas spring is attached to a bracket riveted onto the lower forward corner of the door sill and a bracket bolted and riveted to the bottom of the door. All Door StewardTM versions are FAA-STC approved and come with complete documentation, installation, maintenance, parts listing, continued airworthiness requirements, FAA Form 337 and a 2 year warranty.  This new version is now contained in an installation kit part number B40C10-12 and lists for $240.  Typical installation time is approximately two hours.  The new part number kit contains all parts and instructions to install the Door Steward on the main cabin entry door of Piper models 23,24,28,30,32,34,39,40, 44 or main cabin entry door on the Beech models 33, 35, 36, 55, 56, 58 or 95. Under the partnership agreement with Lycoming, beginning January 06, 2020, Lycoming factory overhauled and rebuilt engines will no longer be shipped to the end-customer with alternators or accessories. Going forward, customers will now purchase Plane-Power components directly from Hartzell Engine Technologies.

Montgomery, AL (January 06, 2020) — Representatives of Hartzell Engine Technologies (HET) announced today that the company has partnered with Lycoming to now be the exclusive direct-to-customer provider of Plane-Power alternators and alternator assemblies for a factory overhauled and rebuilt engine.

“As the manufacturer of Plane-Power alternators and components, we have been providing alternators and accessories to Lycoming for all of their factory overhauled and rebuilt engines for a long time,” stated Keith Bagley, President, Hartzell Engine Technologies.  “The primary reason that we are now transitioning to the direct-to-customer supplier for these components, including full alternator assemblies and pullies, is to provide much better delivery and direct factory support to the end-customer.”

“By eliminating the added steps of shipping to Lycoming and then to the customer, we can respond to the customer’s needs, and correct any problems, faster and more efficiently,” he said. “In addition, should an owner/operator want to upgrade their Plane-Power alternator, the factory-direct order model will make that process a lot easier.”

Bagley also explained that while customers will now buy their Plane-Power alternators and assemblies directly from Hartzell Engine Technologies in the majority of cases, there are some unique situations where, depending on engine model and configuration, alternator brackets and belts will continue to be installed and/or supplied with some Lycoming factory overhauled and rebuilt engines.

Because the transition is happening very quickly, Bagley provided additional details that will help clarify some key points:

• Customers who take delivery of their Lycoming factory overhauled or rebuilt engines, prior to January 06, 2020, which include Lycoming factory-supplied alternators are still required to return an alternator with their exchange core engine.

• Customers who order Lycoming factory overhauled or rebuilt engines on or after January 06, 2020, may keep their existing alternators or replace them at their discretion based on either the condition of the alternator or Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA) where applicable.

• Lycoming Service Instruction No. 1154, FAA-Approved Starters and Alternators, will continue to be an active document.

• The next revision of Lycoming Service Instruction No. 1154, (S.I.1154W) will provide additional HET part numbers for alternators and alternator assemblies available directly from Hartzell Engine Technologies.

“The end-goal of this process is to ensure that aircraft owner/operators and their maintenance providers will enjoy a greatly improve overall customer experience when ordering and installing our Plane-Power alternators and components,” Bagley said. “In addition, should they ever experience an issue, having direct contact with our technical experts here at the factory will make that whole process easier and more efficient.”
