SAIB: HQ-18-30 - Engine Fuel and Control; Jet Fuel Aromatic Hydrocarbon Limits

This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) advises airplane operators, fixed base operators (FBOs), FAA repair stations, Flight Standards District Offices (FSDOs), and foreign civil aviation authorities of jet fuel supplies for which the concentration of aromatic hydrocarbons and the net heat of combustion may not have been measured in accordance with methods specified by the type certificate (TC) holder. These jet fuel supplies would not be compliant with the FAA approved jet fuel operating limitations and should not be used on the TC holders’ products.

Engine Fuel & Control – Operation with Contaminated Jet Fuel

This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) advises airplane operators, fixed base operators (FBOs), FAA repair stations, Flight Standards District Offices (FSDOs), and foreign civil aviation authorities of certain airplanes that uplifted jet fuel contaminated with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), or uplifted jet fuel using refueling equipment that was exposed to DEF.

SAIB: Service, Replacement Times & Inspections

This revised Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) informs owners, operators, repair stations, and flight standard district offices that compliance with a new or revised airworthiness limitation section (ALS) issued by a design approval holder (DAH), or other entity, as a type design change is not mandatory for in-service aircraft operating pursuant to Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 91, unless the aircraft owner/operator voluntarily incorporates the change, it is mandated by an airworthiness directive (AD) to resolve an unsafe condition or required by a previously agreed upon maintenance program..

SAIB: NE-18-27 - Powerplant; Rocker Shaft Boss Inspection

This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) alerts registered owners, operators, and certified repair facilities of all airplanes equipped with Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) Model C75, C85, C90, C125, C145, O-200, O-300, and GO-300 series and Rolls-Royce plc (RR) C90, O-200 and O-300 series reciprocating engines of miscommunication regarding the applicability section of AD 94-05-05 R1, effective on February 13, 1996. The FAA has received reports that FAA personnel have provided guidance that has resulted in confusion on complying with AD 94-05-05R1. The intent of this SAIB is to correct this miscommunication.

2018-CE-018-AD

SUMMARY: We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Piper Aircraft, Inc. (Piper) Models PA-46-600TP (M600) airplanes. This AD requires inserting temporary airspeed limitations into the pilot's operating handbook, installing a temporary placard, inspecting rivets on the cockpit canopy above the left and right cockpit side windows, and installing a repair kit based on the findings of the rivet inspection. This AD was prompted by a report of undersized fasteners installed during manufacturing. We are issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.

2018-CE-012-AD

We are superseding Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2018-02-05 for certain Piper Aircraft, Inc. Models PA-28-140, PA-28-150, PA-28-151, PA-28-160, PA-28-161, PA-28-180, PA-28-181, PA-28-236, PA-28-201T, PA-28R-180, PA-28R-200, PA-28R-201, PA-28R-201T, PA-28RT-201, and PA-28RT-201T airplanes. AD 2018-02-05 required inspecting the fuel tank selector cover to verify the left and right fuel tank selector placards are located at the proper positions and replacing those that are improperly located with new placards.

SAIB: HQ-18-09 AMOC for Application of Alodine

This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin is to provide awareness of an approved alternative method of compliance (AMOC) to all FAA airworthiness directives (ADs) and previously approved AMOCs that mandate the application of Alodine for all FAA type certificated aircraft, engines and propellers. The AMOC allows the use of the renamed Henkel Bonderite products as an alternative to the former Henkel Alodine products when complying with FAA ADs and previously approved AMOCs.

SAIB: CE-18-07 Exhaust Turbocharger; V-band Couplings Used in Exhaust Systems on Turbocharged Reciprocating Engine Powered Aircraft

From the FAA: This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin alerts owners, operators, maintenance technicians, and inspectors of an airworthiness concern, specifically failure of v-band couplings used in exhaust systems on turbocharged aircraft. Cracks originating out of a spot weld, on multi-segment, spot welded, v-band couplings have led to separation of the outer band and failure of the v-band coupling to retain the tailpipe or exhaust inlet pipe on all turbocharged, reciprocating engine powered aircraft, including rotorcraft.

NPRM affecting Cherokee main wing spar

Docket No. FAA–2017–1059; Product Identifier 2017–CE–035–AD

SUMMARY: We propose to adopt a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Piper Aircraft, Inc. Models PA–28–140, PA–28–150, PA–28–160, PA–28–180, PA–28–235, PA–32–260, and PA–32–300 airplanes. This proposed AD was prompted by reports of corrosion found in an area of the main wing spar not easily accessible for inspection. This proposed AD would require installing an inspection access panel in the lower wing skin near the left and the right main wing spars if not already there, inspecting the left and the right main wing spars for corrosion, and taking all necessary corrective actions. We are proposing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.

AD 2017-11-11

FAA SUMMARY: We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for NavWorx, Inc. (NavWorx), Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) Universal Access Transceiver Units (unit). This AD requires removing, disabling, or modifying the ADS-B unit. This AD was prompted by a design change that results in the unit communicating unreliable position information. AD 2017-10-20

FAA SUMMARY: We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Piper Aircraft, Inc. Models PA-31, PA-31-300, PA-31-325, and PA-31-350 airplanes. This AD was prompted by fatigue cracking in the fuselage station (FS) 332.00 bulkhead common to the horizontal stabilizer front spar attachment. This AD requires repetitive inspections to detect cracks in the bulkhead and any necessary repairs. This AD also provides an optional modification if no cracks are found that will greatly reduce the likelihood of the specified cracks. We are issuing this AD to correct the unsafe condition on these products.

AD 2015-10-06

We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Lycoming TIO-540-AJ1A reciprocating engines. This AD was prompted by several reports of cracked engine exhaust pipes. This AD requires inspection of the engine exhaust pipes for cracks and replacement of the turbocharger mounting bracket. We are issuing this AD to prevent failure of the exhaust system due to cracking, which could lead to uncontrolled engine fire, harmful exhaust gases entering the cabin resulting in crew incapacitation, and damage to the airplane.

SAIB: NE-13-35

This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin alerts you, owners, operators, and riggers of Basik Air Concept Parachutes that the Directorate General for Civil Aviation (France) or Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile (DGAC) has issued Emergency Airworthiness Directive (EAD) UF-2012-007. This EAD specifies that European owners and operators return to the manufacturer all reserve parachute systems manufactured by Basik Air Concept and delivered after September 30, 2011 without a European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Form 1 release certificate. The airworthiness concern is not considered an unsafe condition that would warrant airworthiness directive action under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Aviation Regulations (14 CFR) part 39.

AD 2013-10-04

The FAA is correcting an airworthiness directive (AD) that published in the Federal Register. That AD applies to all Piper Aircraft, Inc. Models PA-31, PA-31-325, and PA-31-350 airplanes. Table 1 of paragraph (g) lists the incorrect model/part number for the Model PA-31-350, tail pipe assembly, top. This document corrects that error. In all other respects, the original document remains the same.

AD 2013-13-01

The FAA is correcting an airworthiness directive (AD) that published in the Federal Register. AD 2013-13-01 applies to certain Piper Aircraft, Inc. Models PA-46-310P, PA-46-350P, PA-46R-350T, and PA-46-500TP airplanes. There is an incorrect reference to a paragraph designation, four instances of an incorrect reference to the paragraph in the service bulletin that references an airworthiness limitation, and an incomplete email address for the person to contact in the Related  Information section. This document corrects those errors. In all other respects, the original document remains the same.

AD 2013-15-04

We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Hartzell Propeller, Inc. propeller models HC-(1,D)2(X,V,MV)20-7, HC-(1,D)2(X,V,MV)20-8, and HC-(1,D)3(X,V,MV)20-8. This AD was prompted by failures of the propeller hydraulic bladder diaphragm and resulting engine oil leak. This AD requires replacement of the propeller hydraulic bladder diaphragm. We are issuing this AD to prevent propeller hydraulic bladder diaphragm rupture, loss of engine oil, damage to the engine, and loss of the airplane.

AD 2013-21-02

We are superseding airworthiness directive (AD) 2012-24-09 for Lycoming Engines TIO-540-AK1A, and Continental Motors, Inc. (CMI) TSIO-360-MB, TSIO-360-SB, and TSIO-360-RB reciprocating engines, with certain Hartzell Engine Technologies (HET) turbochargers, model TA0411, installed. AD 2012-24-09 required removing certain HET turbochargers from service before further flight. This AD also requires removing certain HET turbochargers from service before further flight. This AD was prompted by a report that an additional engine, the CMI LTSIO-360-RB, has the affected HET turbochargers installed. We are issuing this AD to prevent turbocharger turbine wheel failure, reduction or complete loss of engine power, loss of engine oil, oil fire, and damage to the airplane.
